About Pompano Beach

Dubbed the ‘Heart of the Gold Coast’, Pompano Beach lies midway between Palm Beach and Miami. What began as a small fishing and farming town has developed into a full-fledged resort community, with an economy that is primarily focused around tourism. Pompano Beach takes its name from the fish which are so plentiful in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of southeastern Florida.

Visitors to Pompano Beach will find themselves greeted by thousands of potential accommodations, 200-plus restaurants, festivals taking place throughout the year, and a variety of attractions including gambling, fishing, hanging out at the beach, shopping and golf. There’s something to suit every taste and temperment, from curious children to sports enthusiasts, from people seeking relaxation to people seeking adventure and thrills.

The biggest source of entertainment in Pompano are the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Pompano is particularly friendly to scuba divers and snorkelers, who travel from all over the world to dive among the several large reefs just off the coast. Divers have the option to swim right off the beach to some of the shallower reefs, or to charter a specially equipped scuba boat that will carry them directly to the deep water reefs. A public fishing pier is open 24 hours a day, and for a small fee, anglers can bring their gear and fish off the sides of the pier. Boogie boarding, surfing and sailing are all allowed on the beach, which also feature lifeguards on duty eight hours a day.

Fishing is of particular importance to Pompano Beach, which is, after all, named after a saltwater fish. All types of fishing are popular there, with plenty of fishing access in both freshwater and saltwater. Sportfishers will appreciate the efforts spearheaded by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo (South Florida’s largest annual fishing tournament), which has sunk over twenty derelict freighters in order to create a massive artificial reef and ensure fertile fishing grounds for decades to come. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the fruits of this labor with such annual festivals as the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival, which features unique seafood recipes from local restaurants as well as arts, crafts and live entertainment.

Sports are another big pasttime in Pompano Beach. With nineteen parks and recreational areas, Pompano Beach prides itself on the large amount of ‘green space’ within the city. The Tradewinds Park, which is home to Butterfly World, also offers horseback riding and batting cages, and the Quiet Waters Park features biking, hiking, camping, waterslides and swimming areas. The Everglades Holiday Park has camping and fishing, as well as airboat tours that skim across the river of sawgrass. Tennis players can find well lit, well maintained courts throughout the city, and golfers will enjoy the private and public courses throughout the area. Pompano’s proximity to Miami means that teams from all four major professional sports leagues are within a short drive. Harness racing is also quite popular, and can be enjoyed at Pompano Park Racing.
